Background of the Study
Rapid infrastructural development, particularly road construction, poses significant challenges to the preservation of archaeological heritage. In Asaba, extensive road projects often overlap with historically significant areas, leading to inadvertent destruction of archaeological remains (Okoro, 2023). This study examines how road construction activities impact archaeological sites and the associated cultural heritage. Urban expansion and improved transportation networks are essential for economic growth; however, these benefits may come at the cost of losing irreplaceable historical data. The tension between development and preservation is particularly evident in regions where archaeological sites are not adequately protected by regulatory frameworks (Eze, 2024). The research employs a multidisciplinary approach, combining field surveys, spatial analysis, and stakeholder interviews to understand the full impact of these activities on heritage sites. By highlighting the conflict between infrastructural development and cultural preservation, the study aims to propose strategies that can mitigate damage while accommodating urban growth (Adebisi, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
The extensive road construction in Asaba has led to significant degradation of archaeological heritage, causing irreversible damage to cultural artifacts and historical sites. The lack of robust preservation policies exacerbates these issues, making it difficult for heritage managers to balance development and conservation (Chukwu, 2023). This study seeks to address these challenges by assessing the extent of the damage and proposing remedial measures.
